During the 16th and 17th centuries, pirates constantly attacked the city to sack the Spanish ships loaded with treasures to be taken back to the Old World. Finally, the city=s regents decided to turn Campeche into a fortified city, surrounding it with a wall topped by bastions and military forts. The architectural style chosen by the founding fathers fused the religious, cultural and military styles of the day to create a harmonious complex with its own colorful Mexican flair.
